Two honest caveats keep this from being a clean win. First, those same r/deaf users recommend free phone apps — Google Live Transcribe and the XRAI app — as cheaper alternatives to $1,000-plus glasses. Second, an r/BeAmazed thread flags the marketing as predatory: captioning glasses are often sold to hearing relatives as a miracle fix, then priced several times above the free apps that do much of the same work. There’s no physical reason frame-mounted mics should beat earbuds in a crowd — and RayNeo’s 15-25% admission suggests they don’t. Every “glasses win in noise” figure we found came from a glasses vendor (RayNeo, Dymesty, AirCaps); none was independently reproduced.
Two-way conversation is the bigger structural gap. Glasses caption the other person by default; your reply usually has to run through the phone app. On r/Halliday an owner confirms translation is currently one-directional. Engadget’s Even G1 review made it concrete: when the reviewer spoke his English reply, the glasses tried to translate that too, undermining the back-and-forth — and because language switching needs the phone app, he concluded you might as well use Google Translate. Where earbuds still make more sense
None of this makes earbuds the “accurate” choice — this site has documented at length that earbud translation only holds up in quiet, one-on-one, major-language, short-sentence conditions, and falls apart in noise and groups (see do translation earbuds actually work? and our 2026 limitations rundown). The accessibility accuracy case for deaf and HoH users in real noisy, multi-speaker rooms is asserted by vendors and supported anecdotally on r/deaf, but not independently measured. A Slator resource on the topic returned empty on two fetch attempts; a TechRadar Even G1 review sat behind a signup wall; and the earbud latency figures here are search-snippet level, not fully-fetched tests.
