Methodology
How we research (and what we refuse to publish)
Most translation-earbud content online is either a manufacturer's blog post or a listicle rewritten from spec sheets. We do something different — and we're explicit about what it is and isn't.
What our verdicts are built from
Every article on this site aggregates real, checkable user evidence:
- Owner reviews on Amazon, Trustpilot and brand stores — including the negative ones marketing pages hope you won't read.
- Community reports from Reddit, Tripadvisor, Rick Steves travel forums and Facebook travel groups.
- Video reviews on YouTube — flagged as sponsored when they carry discount codes or affiliate pushes.
- Hands-on tests by independent reviewers we link and credit, never republish.
- Manufacturer documentation for specs — fact-checked, with marketing inconsistencies called out (language counts are the worst offender).
Each article ends with a numbered source list. If we can't source a claim, we don't make it.
What we don't do
- We don't invent hands-on claims. If we haven't held a device, we say "owners report", not "we tested". When we begin in-house testing, those articles will say so explicitly and show the evidence.
- We don't take payment for rankings. Some links are affiliate links (disclosure); commissions never decide a verdict — several of our most-recommended options earn us nothing.
- We don't repeat accuracy marketing. "98% accurate in 144 languages" claims are reported as claims, next to what users actually experience.
- We don't publish unedited AI text. Drafting is AI-assisted; every page is human-edited, and every factual claim traces to a cited source.
How we weigh conflicting reports
- Recency first. Firmware and app updates change these products; a 2024 complaint may be fixed — or a 2024 rave may predate a subscription change.
- Specific beats vague. "EN→JP lagged 3–4 seconds in a noisy izakaya" outweighs ten "works great!!" reviews.
- Independent beats incentivized. We down-weight reviews with discount codes, affiliate pushes, or review-for-free-unit patterns, and say so.
- Patterns beat anecdotes. One angry review is noise; the same failure described by many owners across platforms is a finding.
